Vorticity Determines the Force on Bodies Immersed in Active Fluids

چکیده

When immersed into a fluid of active Brownian particles, passive bodies might start to undergo linear or angular directed motion depending on their shape. Here we exploit the divergence theorem relate forces responsible for this density and current induced by---but far away from---the body. In general, force is composed two contributions: due strength dipolar field component particles leaving boundary, generating nonvanishing vorticity polarization. We derive numerically corroborate results periodic systems, which are fundamentally different from unbounded systems with that scale area system. demonstrate localized close body points at local curvature changes, enabling rational design particle shapes desired propulsion properties.

Frequency response of cantilever beams immersed in viscous fluids with applications to the atomic force microscope

The vibrational characteristics of a cantilever beam are well known to strongly depend on the fluid in which the beam is immersed. In this paper, we present a detailed theoretical analysis of the frequency response of a cantilever beam, that is immersed in a viscous fluid and excited by an arbitrary driving force. Due to its practical importance in application to the atomic force microscope ~AF...

An Immersed Boundary Method for Rigid Bodies

We develop an immersed boundary (IB) method for modeling flows around fixed or moving rigid bodies that is suitable for a broad range of Reynolds numbers, including steady Stokes flow. The spatio-temporal discretization of the fluid equations is based on a standard staggered-grid approach. Fluid-body interaction is handled using Peskin's IB method; however, unlike existing IB approaches to such...

Torsional frequency response of cantilever beams immersed in viscous fluids with applications to the atomic force microscope

The frequency response of a cantilever beam is strongly dependent on the fluid in which it is immersed. In a companion study, Sader @J. Appl. Phys. 84, 64, ~1998!# presented a theoretical model for the flexural vibrational response of a cantilever beam, that is immersed in a viscous fluid, and excited by an arbitrary driving force. Due to its relevance to applications of the atomic force micros...

Compressible Fluids: The discontinuity of the vorticity vector on a shock wave in thermodynamical variables

The discontinuity of the vorticity is written as a function of the vector T grad s, (where T is the temperature and s the specific entropy). The expression is obtained thanks to potential equations and independently of the mass conservation and the equation of momentum balance.
